Characteristics: Duration – 1 day Level of difficulty – beginners Type: trekking in a circular route Duration – 5 hours with the breaks Region: Danube Plain Elevation: 200 m

Program: We depart from Varna at 8:00am from ‘The Cathedral’ (by the taxi rank). It is possible to use your own transport, the price of the package will be reduced by 20%. If you don’t live in Varna and you have your own transport – please get in contact with us so we can give you information about the exact location.

We are going to track the continuity of different ages in the development of these lands. We start with the Thracians – the most developed (for their times) tribes who lived by the lower stream of the Danube river. After this, we are going through the age of Christianity (5th – 6th century) which we will see in the rock monasteries in this region.

Archeologists have discovered here cult pits and sites, altars, carvings, underground galleries that are connected to the Thracian tribe, Getty. The most significant group from the complex is located in the village of Strelkovo and is popular by the name of the ‘Sacred Valley of Zalmoxis’ – antropodemon, god-priest.

Half a kilometer after the village we will find ourselves at the bottom of the Canyon where there are many rock crowns and caves. We will enter the ‘Badjaliata’ – the largest rock cavity.

After this, we will go to the opposite coast to see the cult site which was purposed for predicting the future. We go back to the village of Onogur where we will pass through the next Canyon and the age – canyon of the Dry River. Our trek will start from the counter wall of Onogur Dam which is currently heavy swampy and is home to numerous birds and amphibians.

Following gradual ascent over the dam which will give us an interesting perspective on the meanders of the river. We will enjoy this exquisite swing of The Artist. Our first anthropogenic site will be ‘Kaleto’ – a kind of peninsula surrounded by the river. Passing through the only place that leads to Kaleto, there we will be able to enjoy a view of the Canyon from its both sides. There at the top will await us the late antique and medieval Fortress of Adina – the remains of which are still clearly visible. Natural fortification with steep slopes surrounded by forest-rich of hunter’s prey and a full river (in medieval age). This spot offered excellent conditions for living. There used to be a watershed between Dobrichka and The Dry River.

We will see the first of the early Christianity rock monasteries on the opposite side of the Canyon – it’s called the “Tarapana” or the “Mint”. It appears similar to a human face with 2 eyes and a mouth. Near the “Tarapana, there is “Sandaklara maara” representing the tomb of the monks. Our trek continues towards the fortress Adina – the place where the river makes a back turn and surrounds the rock from 3 directions. On this picturesque site, we will have our lunch break together.

After this, we will visit the last monastery called “Giaur Evreli”. It is considered to be the largest early Byzantine rock complex from the 5th – 6th centuries which existed until the 10th century. There is an altar, a chapel, an abbess, a living area, and a well, located on three levels. We are going to climb up to the land of the village of Balik for one last opportunity for a panoramic photo.

This is how our mystical journey back in time and through the secret beauties of the Danube Plain will come to an end. Our bus will be expecting us by one of the recreation areas near the Canyon. The estimated departure to Varna is at 18 o’clock.

Important! Every participant must be in good physical health and not be under the influence of alcohol or any other psychoactive substances.
