PROGRAM

8-Day Cultural & Adventure Tour: Bulgaria’s History, Mountains & UNESCO Wonders

Day 1: Sofia – National Historical Museum & Boyana Church
Start your journey in Sofia with a 1-hour visit to the National Historical Museum, exploring Bulgaria’s rich past from the Thracians to the end of the Communist period in 1989.

Next, visit the Boyana Church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Bulgaria’s “100 Tourist Sites.” Built in three stages (11th, 13th, and 19th centuries), the church is renowned for its 1259 frescoes, a masterpiece of the pre-Renaissance Bulgarian culture.

End the day with a welcome dinner in a traditional restaurant and overnight stay in Sofia.

Day 2: Sofia – Devin
Departure from Sofia at 8:30 AM (Gen. Gurko St., opposite the National Stadium).

Arrive in Devin, with accommodation options in guest houses or hotels. Relax with a SPA session in a mineral-water pool, or take an optional walk along the Eko Path Struilitsa-Kaleto, a scenic trail along the Devinska River with bridges, staircases, and rest areas.

Day 3: Devin – Kastrakli (Mountain Biking)
Begin your bike adventure through the Western Rhodopes! The route features a gradual ascent to the Kastrakli Nature Reserve, with a stop at Kemerov Bridge, a significant Ottoman-era landmark.

Overnight at a local guest house with a chance to enjoy authentic Rhodope patatnik (potato dish).

Active time: 5 hrs (including rest)

Ascent: 1200 m | Descent: 730 m

Tip: Bring dry food for the ride

Day 4: Kastrakli – Yagodina
Descend gradually to Borino, visiting the Museum of Pine Tar and a local cheese producer. Optional walk to the gorge to see the Orpheus flower, a national endemic species.

Continue higher into the mountains, ending with a descent to Kuru Dere, where you can explore a little-known passage cave. Overnight in Yagodina, savoring local Rhodope dishes such as klin and rogatnik, with sunset from a panoramic viewpoint.

Active time: 5.5 hrs | Ascent: 930 m | Descent: 1070 m

Day 5: Trigrad & Orlovo Oko
After breakfast, bike toward the Greek border, visiting a village steeped in history and inspiration for writer Nikolay Haytov. Descend into the Trigrad Gorge and enjoy local surprises.

Relax with a visit to Haramiiska Cave and the Orlovo Oko (Eagle’s Eye) panoramic platform at 1563 m, overlooking the Boynovska Gorge. Afternoon free. Overnight in Trigrad.

Day 6: Trigrad – Chairski Lakes
Today focuses on ascending to the lodge of Chairski Lakes (1395 m) after a descent to Chair Dere. Learn about the lakes and enjoy a varied route of forest roads, descents, and gradual climbs. Overnight at a guest house, experiencing Rhodope hospitality and homemade cheeses.

Active time: 7 hrs | Ascent: 1300 m | Descent: 970 m

Day 7: Tuzlata – Smolyan
Bike to the peak of Tuzlata, exploring local history and education along the way. Continue along the panoramic road of the Rhodopes with stunning 360° views, have lunch at the Perelik lodge, and descend to Smolyan for your final night.

Active time: 7.5 hrs | Ascent: 1900 m | Descent: 2400 m

Day 8: Plovdiv – Sofia
Transfer to Plovdiv, Bulgaria’s most ancient city. Explore Roman and Thracian remains before returning to Sofia in the afternoon.
