Best of Bulgaria – Eight-Day Cultural Journey
Day 1 – Arrival in Sofia
Welcome to Sofia, one of the oldest cities in Europe and the capital of Bulgaria. Due to its strategic location, Sofia became the capital of the Roman province of Dacia and later flourished as an important trading and cultural center during the Byzantine, Ottoman, and Bulgarian Empires. In 1879, it became the capital of liberated Bulgaria. Today, Sofia is a cosmopolitan city with a rich mix of museums, galleries, historic sites, and vibrant nightlife.

Day 2 – Boyana Church, National History Museum & Rila Monastery
After breakfast, we head to the outskirts of Sofia. First, we visit the Boyana Church (UNESCO), a pre-Renaissance gem from the late 10th–early 11th century. Its 1259 frescoes are among the most complete and well-preserved examples of medieval art in the Balkans.
Next, we explore the National History Museum, Bulgaria’s largest, with collections covering:
Prehistory (6th–2nd millennium BC)
Bulgarian lands from the 6th century BC to the 6th century AD
The Bulgarian State in the Middle Ages (7th–14th century)
Bulgarian lands under Ottoman rule (1396–1878)
In the afternoon, we drive to the Rila Monastery (UNESCO), Bulgaria’s largest monastery and most iconic cultural site, nestled deep in the Rila Mountains. The monastery’s 19th-century architecture and frescoes were created by some of Bulgaria’s most talented artists.
Optional short walk (~40 minutes) to the hermit cave of St. John of Rila, a sacred site where he lived for seven years.

Day 3 – Plovdiv & Starosel
We transfer to Plovdiv, one of the world’s oldest cities, older than Athens and Rome. A guided tour of the Old Townhighlights:

Afternoon options:
Visit the village of Starosel, home to a major Thracian cult complex (4th century BC)

Day 4 – Valley of Roses, Thracian Tomb & Nessebar
We explore the famous Rose Valley, where Bulgaria’s symbolic rose oil is produced. Highlights include:
Visit to a historic rose distillery (built 1909)
Rose Museum, the only one in the world dedicated to rose oil
Kazanluk Thracian Tomb (UNESCO)
Historical Museum of Kazanlak
Transfer to Nessebar on the Black Sea coast. Guided tour of the Old Town (UNESCO) with its churches, historic houses, and rich cultural heritage.

Day 5 – Varna, Madara Rider & Veliko Tarnovo
Drive along the Black Sea coast to Varna (~1.5 hours). Guided walking tour of the city center with a visit to the Archaeological Museum, showcasing the world’s oldest processed gold.
Continue to Madara Rider (UNESCO), a unique rock relief of a horseman carved into the Shumen Plateau. Then transfer to Veliko Tarnovo, the medieval capital of Bulgaria’s Second Kingdom, with a stop at Arbanassi village, famous for its architectural heritage and panoramic views.

Day 6 – Veliko Tarnovo Sightseeing & Free Afternoon
Veliko Tarnovo, built along the meanders of the Yantra River, is considered Bulgaria’s most picturesque town. Highlights include:

Historic churches, palaces, museums, and craft workshops
Afternoon free for independent exploration or relaxation.

Day 7 – Gabrovo, Bozhentsi & God’s Eye Cave
Morning visit to the Bozhentsi Architectural-Ethnographic Complex, an open-air museum showcasing 19th-century Bulgarian National Revival life, including craft workshops for ceramics, wood carving, and more.
Stop in Gabrovo at the Humor House, a quirky museum celebrating Bulgarian satire and humor. Visit God’s Eye Cave, Bulgaria’s longest stone bridge formation, surrounded by breathtaking natural scenery.
Farewell dinner in Sofia city center.

Day 8 – Departure
Breakfast at the hotel and transfer to Sofia Airport for departure.
