Pirin & Rila Hiking Adventure – 4 Days

Day 0 – Arrival in Sofia & Transfer to Bansko

Welcome to Sofia, one of Europe’s oldest cities and the capital of Bulgaria. Due to its strategic location, Sofia was once the capital of the Roman province of Dacia and later developed into an important trading and cultural center. Today, it is a cosmopolitan city full of museums, galleries, historic sites, and vibrant nightlife.

Highlights:

– City tour of Sofia (~1.5 hours)

– Transfer to Bansko (approx. 2–3 hours)

– Optional walk in Bansko’s historic old town

– Welcome dinner at Guest House “Deshka” with traditional folklore performance

Day 1 – Vihren Lodge & Vihren Summit (2,914 m)

Transfer from Bansko to Vihren Lodge (1,970 m) in Pirin National Park. Today, we hike to Mount Vihren, the highest peak of the Pirin Mountains, the second-highest in Bulgaria, and the third-highest in the Balkans.

The northern slopes are covered in marble stone, formed over millions of years.

Hike details:

– Duration: 8 hours (loop hike)

– Positive altitude gain: 950 m

– Return to Vihren Lodge

Day 2 – Muratov Peak & Spano Pole Shelter

Hike from Vihren Lodge to Muratov Peak (2,669 m), then descend to Spano Pole Shelter (2,050 m). The trail passes rocky slopes and Muratovo Lake, offering some of the most spectacular panoramic views in Pirin.

Hike details:

– Duration: 6–7 hours

– Descending: 450 m

– Accommodation: charming wooden cabins at Spano Pole Shelter

Day 3 – Tevno Ezero & Bunderishky Lakes

A longer, full-day hike from Spano Pole to Tevno Ezero Shelter (2,512 m), passing valleys, streams, and small lakes. After lunch at the shelter, we follow a panoramic trail along the ridge, with breathtaking views of:

Chaira, Bashliyski, Valyavishki, Tipitski, and Banderishki lake cirques

The southern slopes of Rila Mountain

Return to Bansko in the evening. Relax in a hot mineral pool, followed by a farewell dinner at a traditional restaurant.

Day 4 – Rila Monastery, Stob Pyramids & Departure

Visit the Rila Monastery, Bulgaria’s largest and most important Christian site, founded by the hermit St. Ivan Rilski in the 10th century. The monastery is part of the UNESCO World Heritage List.

After exploring the monastery:

Enjoy lunch by the Rilska River (fresh trout recommended)

Short hike (~1 hour) to the Stob Sand Pyramids, with panoramic views from the top

Transfer back to Sofia Airport (~1.5 hours) for departure. Please book flights after 17:00 to allow enough time.
